Shopping was fun again and the polka dots won

Remember when shopping for clothes was fun? When you could browse through the racks without your husband nagging you to hurry up? The good old days when there were no kids crying in their stroller? When everything fit just right when you tried it on?

I actually had one of those days! It was last Monday, when my sister was in town and we went to Woodfield to peruse the fall fashion trends at our leisure. We stumbled upon a store called Dry Goods and it’s like all the stars aligned: I loved everything I saw, Arielle was taking a nap, and we had enough time to try things on.

I was drawn to tan and black/white that day for some reason, and each piece had something unique about it – lace here, cut-outs there, hi-low, or an interesting back.  In my head, this is supposed to play out like a fun dress-up montage with “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” playing in the background, but it ended up just looking like a series of selfies.  Dah, well…here goes:

Loving plaid // hi-low // sheer but not see-through // looks hot with boots:

All the things I tried on were $30 or less! I wanted to buy them all; however, being on a budget and blah blah responsibility, blah blah, I don’t really need new clothes, blah blah blah…I talked myself out of all of them except for the one hi-low, polka dot shirt with the pretty cut-out in the back. It was cheap and practical – at only $14, I could wear it as a casual top anywhere or even wear it at work.

Here’s what I bought and how I paired it up with some existing stuff in my closet:

So even a week later, I’m glowing from my joyous shopping experience even though I didn’t end up buying much. Heck, the only one I regret not buying is the lace and chevron hi-low dress, but I got over it pretty quickly since I probably won’t have any occasion to wear it to.  I’m pretty happy what I ended up with.

When was the last time you were excited about shopping?

  1. I’m glad you didn’t talk yourself out of it all of it! You look beautiful in the photos. I haven’t had a good shopping spree in ages. A few years ago, my sister and I went to Anthropologie and I spent.. $500. Seriously. I guess it was my only clothes shopping for the whole year, but still!!!

    • Thanks so much, Tamara! I would LOVE to do a shopping spree at Anthropologie some day. I would probably not be able to go clothes shopping AND food shopping for the whole year!

  2. That shirt is awesome. You made the right choice.
I love the back. I need a good shopping day myself, or I need to drop the few pounds I’ve gained this month 😉

    • Thanks, Herchel! I’ve worn it twice already since I got it. Hehehe! I wish good shopping days came around more often, but good thing they are far and few between – otherwise, we’d all be broke!

  3. You look great! I’m not a big shopper either. But I’d probably like it more if I could wear things as well as you obviously do! Glad you had fun 🙂

  4. I love chevron too! But I don’t really like to shop. I do have a cute boutique downtown that I like…but mostly because the owner has come to know my sense of style and can pick something out that I will look good in and like in no time flat!

    • I would shop at that boutique all the time if the store manager acted like my personal shopper. Actually, the manager at my local Francesca’s offered to do a personal styling party for me and my friends – sounds like a fun girls’ night out and future blog post!

  5. I remember those days, but it’s been years since I’ve gone out and had a fun shopping trip. I mostly shop online now because it easier since I have kids. It looks like you had a great time shopping and found some great deals

    • I did have fun! I shop online for the stuff that I know I want, but when it comes to clothes and discovering new styles I prefer to go to the stores to try it on. Thanks for stopping by, Sonya!

  6. Hey! You bought exactly the same one that I would have picked! That top is definitely my favorite! It’s so cute on you!
