House Hunters: A-Z Edition Part 1

HGTV’s House Hunters is one of my favorite shows.  It really over-simplifies the home buying process: an office for him, a large closet for her, and granite counter tops in the kitchen.  Really, those are the only major decision points when buying a home.  There are only three houses to choose from, and they are all pretty darn close in terms of positives and negatives.  In the end, they pick the one that doesn’t need new carpet or new wall colors.  I think the simplicity of it all is the reason why I love this show.  Oh, if it were really that easy in real life, then where would we all be?  In a world with no mortgage crisis perhaps…(sigh)

Here’s how our House Hunters story would play out if it were that simple…I’ll be writing in third-person since I’m imagining that Suzanne Wang is doing the narration:

Jeff and Grace are currently living in Jeff’s parents’ house with their two small children and  their dog, Coconut.  They are out-growing their temporary dwellings and are in need of their own single-family home.  They would like to stay in the same area, which is close to Grace’s work.  Their top wish list items include:

  • Open floor plan
  • 4 Bedrooms
  • Office
  • Bonus room or loft
  • Full basement
  • Good school district
  • Nice backyard, preferably with a fence for Coconut

House #1

House #1 is a traditional home that meets everything on their wishlist and is move-in ready.  However, it’s at the top of their price range and farthest from their current location.

House #2

House #2 is a contemporary home in a great school district.  The house meets everything in their wish list and then some since it includes 2 fireplaces and over 3700 square feet.  However, the backyard lacks privacy and Grace & Jeff are concerned that it might be too expensive for their family in terms of maintenance and taxes.

House #3

House #3 is closest to their current location and has a fenced in yard.  However, it needs a lot of work and lacks the full basement that Jeff needs to turn into his man cave.

So, which will it be?  House #1 (far, but move-in ready), House #2 (big, but maybe too big), or House #3 (ideal location, but no man cave)???  Leave a comment below with your best guess!
