Arielle’s Drawings: Selfies, Mermaids, and Hello Kitty

I wish I could freeze a version of A&Z just the way they are now, while their original versions continue to grow up.  I would keep the cute, inquisitive 4-year-old version of Arielle and display her on my coffee table during parties so she can sing Katy Perry’s “Roar” or tell knock-knock jokes that don’t make any sense to entertain the guests.

But they don’t make coffee table versions of kids that you can hold on to as keepsakes.  I guess that’s why us parents hold on to old baby clothes and toys, and get all sentimental over archived art projects and report cards.

It’s happening right now – I get all sentimental over Arielle’s artwork.  She walks around the house with her box of “school supplies” even though she doesn’t go to school and she pulls paper from the supply closet in the office.  She spends hours drawing self-portraits, Hello Kitty, or whatever happens to flow out of her imagination through her left hand and onto the paper.  Yes, she’s a lefty!

There are papers scattered all over the house.  I can’t bring myself to throw some of them away because they’re so precious to me. Here are a few I found lying around – Arielle described some of the drawings so I jotted down some notes in the caption:

Arielle’s self-portrait

Arielle and Coconut …and the wicked witch??

Arielle Art 2013 3

Arielle and Mommy in Japan visiting Hello Kitty. She thought Hello Kitty was at Disney World, but I told her that Hello Kitty comes from Japan.

Arielle Art 2013 4

Ariel and Prince Eric fighting the evil Ursula (and practicing the letter ‘x’)

How cute are those drawings?  It’s like getting a glimpse into her 4-year-old head.  One time she actually drew a self-portrait with her wearing purple glasses.  I wish I kept that one, but my sis took it home to hang it on her fridge.

Question for the moms out there: How do you archive your kids’ artwork?  Do you keep ’em in a box, scan them, or turn them into fancy scrapbooks?  Or just toss it eventually?  How do you prevent  yourself from becoming a hoarder of your kids’ projects?

It's hanging on my fridge! This is sooo cute. You didn't get one of her frowny-face spiders. 😀 The witch made it in though because the witch is in her head!

  3. Pretty adorable! My daughter is four and a leftie too And I love the Wicked Witch rendition. She has done so much artwork at school and right now it’s in a huge pile in our basement. We need to figure out something to do to archive and fast!

  4. These drawings are so incredibly sweet! I wish I had an answer for you, but I’m not yet a mommy… That being said, I imagine I’d want to hoard everything myself. These are keepsakes you’ll want to keep with you, always. Stopping in from SITS today; hope you are enjoying your weekend!

    • Thanks for stopping by, Charlotte! I might as well sign up for a future episode of “hoarders” because I still haven’t thrown any away. Heading over to visit your blog, too!

Ahh! My four year old is a lefty also. She draws me pictures of hearts, butterflies, princesses (her selfies lol) and castles.

  6. Oh, I’m already a hoarder and he’s only two. It’s going to be bad. We are going to need a bigger house, I can tell. Visiting from SITS.

  7. Artwork get displayed on the fridge for awhile then it goes in a storage box. It’s starting to get a little out of control, but I just don’t know what else to do with it.

    • Hi Colleen! I totally feel ya on this. It’s out of control, but I don’t have the heart to throw it away. Today, she drew a picture of the a sad typhoon victim in the Philippines.

  8. I used to keep all of my son’s artwork, but then it was too much. So now I only keep a few. It would be nice if we could freeze our kids in their sweetest moments.

  9. I use scrapbooks with the plastic sleeves. I slide the art right in, very simple. I’ve been doing this with all of her art since daycare. I don’t keep everything, but I think I am going to have a storage problem very soon!
