{DIY} Photo Booth Props on a Stick

This was our second year hosting New Year’s Eve and our family always has so much fun at my photo booth station.  This year, I created mustache and bow tie photo booth props that were super easy and inexpensive!  Here’s how to make DIY booth props on a stick:

Supplies

  • Mustache, bow tie, kissy lips, and other templates – Follow my Pinterest board of free templates here.
  • Wooden sticks
  • Thick paper – I used matboard paper, but card stock works just fine
  • X-acto knife or scissors
  • Hot glue gun

Step 1: Print Photo Prop Templates

I found a bunch of free templates for mustaches and bow ties on good ol’ Pinterest.  I also found some kissy lips, glasses:

Follow Mommy A-Z’s board DIY photo booth prop templates on Pinterest.

Or, just head to these awesome blogs/websites to get your free printable templates:

  • Free Mustache, Bows, Glasses, Lips, and more photo prop templates from Kids Can Have Fun
  • Free Mustache Printables from Tiffany Kelley
  • Free comic bubble printables and other fun stuff props from Design and Paper
  • Free Printable New Year Eve Photo Props from I Heart Nap Time.  I think the 2014 sunglasses would also make great graduation photo booth props!

You can print directly on card stock paper, or just print them on regular paper so you can trace the shapes onto colored or patterned matboard or card stock.

Step 2: Cut out your props

This part is the most time consuming.  I think it took me like 2 hours as I was watching the Breaking Bad marathon.  LOL  Use the scissors for the larger shapes and save the X-acto knife for the intricate details and that should cut down the time a bit.

Step 3: Adhere the wooden sticks to the cut-outs

Use a hot glue gun to stick the cut-outs to the wooden sticks.  I placed the sticks right along the edge and tried not to let the top of the stick show above the cut-out.  Give it a few moments to dry and they should be good to go!

Step 4: Strike a pose!

You can set up your back drop any way you like.  I just hung some Christmas lights behind a white backdrop to create the sparkly glow.  This year’s NYE theme was also “Twinning” so we had a ton of fun:

Fun stuff, huh?  Let me know if you try creating your own photo booth props and how they turn out!  I’m hoping to continue the tradition next year, so please let me know if you can think of any other cool photo booth ideas!

  1. I love photo booths! I had one at my baby shower a couple of years ago and everyone had so much fun! Next time you do it, make hats too! They add another layer of fun. You can see some pics here (I apologize for the craziness in pictures, it was one of the posts transferred from my old blog and everything got messed up.) http://ladyslittleloves.com/2012/02/a-mustache-bash-baby-shower.html
I REALLY like what you did with your background! Did you string lights to the wall?

    • Thanks, Shannon! Hats are a great idea for next year. I just checked out your mustached-themed baby shower and that looked like a ton of fun! For the backdrop, I just hung lights behind a white drop cloth backdrop – I’m sure you can use a plain white sheet, too. It helps to hide the actual string, but you still get the soft, glowy, and twinkly effect.

  2. Absolutely ADORABLE! And so much fun! I am definitely doing something like this next New Year’s Eve! Love it! :)-Ashley

  3. I’m so glad you posted this! And I totally went and pinned it/shared it. I love the backdrop as is, and I couldn’t figure it out at first Shows you how much I know about backdrops! I saw this at a wedding once but it was not as well done as yours. Honestly.

    • Thanks, Tamara. My friend did a similar backdrop for her son’s Christmas card pictures and gave me the tip to put the lights BEHIND the white sheet to hide the string. I had an epic AH-HA moment when she told me that. LOL

  4. Thanks for this! OK, I totally won’t lie – I was actually wondering if you made or bought the props (in your last post).

    • Thanks, Roaen! I thought of buying them and did some shopping around the web (not as robust research as you do! LOL), and a pack of props were like $24 PLUS shipping. I was like, “Pshhh! I can totally do that myself!” It ended up costing me just under $10 for the materials with a coupon at Hobby Lobby. I already had the hot glue gun, so I guess that doesn’t count.

  5. These so cute and fun to make! I’ve never even thought to do something like this. I’m going to pin it so I have it for later to reference. Thanks for sharing!

  6. These look so fun!! My kids would love having those props just for being silly around the house. I’ll bet I could even get Benjamin to smile with one of these!!

  7. This would be fun to do for our girl’s night! We usually do a photo booth with different props. If would be fun to replace the mocking duck lips photos with those lips!

  8. This looks like SO much fun. If we host a NYE party next year, I’m so doing it. I bet the kids loved it. What little cutie-pies. And that gold skirt and polka dot shirt? Gold + black and white + polka dots … some of my favorite things!!

    • The kids had a blast! I had to work really hard at convincing my daughter to be my twin for the night. She really wanted to wear a dress so the gold skirt was a compromise. I thought it looked cute! After pictures were over and she was done being my twin, she changed into a dress. She’s 4 going on 13, seriously!

  9. I almost forgot to tell you. Your 2014 happy new year block sign from this post is hanging on the front door of my sons of pre-K room. I couldn't believe that I saw your stuff in my town!

  10. This is sooo cute. I love photo booths! The only thing I probably hate about them is the long line of people waiting to be photographed, haha!! (I only experienced this during parties at work and my manager’s daughter’s bday) and the idea of bringing it to your own home with your family just fits! 🙂

    • Oh, this was a hacked photo booth that I just set up in my house. People weren’t waiting – they were just sitting around eating and drinking and I would pull people in if the “booth” was empty. LOL Unlike a real photo booth where you get the picture in a few minutes, they had to wait until I woke up the next day (at around 3:30pm) to edit the photos and share them. But you bring up a fun idea – maybe I should do this with an old skool polaroid next year so they get their pictures right away! Rea – you’re a genius!

  11. I really like your post! Thanks a lot for sharing this amazing piece. I am going to recommend it to a friend of mine who is going to find it to be very helpful.

  12. Really cute! I have a bunch of movember mustache sketches on my blog. Goes with your theme. 🙂 http://www.designinkarnation.com/p/gallery.html
