A Puppy Story: Coconut Part 1

Happy Birthday Coconut.jpg

Today is my sweet, sweet Coconut’s 8th Birthday – or in doggie years, 56th birthday!  I can honestly say that Coconut is one of my greatest loves of my lifetime.  He’s the sweetest, cutest shih-tzu ever (he’s also part elephant, part bunny but I”ll explain that later).  In all his doggie years, he’s been through quite a lot – being taken away from his mommy, puppy love, becoming a father, getting a new sister and brother, and now a yard of his own to pee and poop!  Read about his puppy life story.  Or, skip the reading and just look at his cute pictures:

The only Coconut I could ever have

Arielle always asks me where I got Coconut and I tell her that I bought him from the Internet.  True story.  I found him on a website and I was in love at first sight.  I told myself, “If I ever get that puppy, I’d name him ‘Coconut'” because I’m allergic to coconut the fruit and he would be the only coconut I could ever have.  The next day, I checked the website and all the other pups were reserved except for him – so I knew it was meant to be and put my order in right away.  When they updated the website to say, “Reserved for Gracielle” it was one of the happiest moments of my life.

He was only 2.2lbs when I brought him home, he was a little hyper but super affectionate.  His cuteness was unreal – he looked like a stuffed toy that came to life!

Coconut was never the most agile of dogs.  When he runs, he actually hops like a bunny.  And when he jumps – wait – he doesn’t jump.  At all.  Just like an elephant!  Here’s a video of puppy Coconut when I first discovered his fear of heights:

Coconut + Twinkle = Puppy Love

A few weeks later, my parents decided to get a puppy, too.  They brought home a little shih-tzu girl puppy and named her Twinkle…and so the love story began.

Shortly after Coconut and Twinkle became acquainted with each other, my parents moved to their new home in Florida.  Coconut was left home alone while I went to work, so I hired a puppy-sitter to come to my house to keep him company.  When I went to visit my parents in Florida, I brought Coconut with me and he was reunited with his best bud Twinkle.

My parents suggested for me to let Coconut stay with Twinkle in Florida for an “extended vacation.”  What they really meant was that they wanted to keep him all to themselves and steal him from me.  I must have had the word “sucker” written on my face because I actually agreed.  I cried all the way home, every day, every night like a piece of my soul was ripped out of my body.  Sounds dramatic, but it’s true.  I would call my parents on the phone, sobbing, “IIIIIII MIISSSS MYYY COOOCOOOOONUUUTT!” and they would put me on the speakerphone so I could talk to him.  (This was in the dark-ages before Skype, FaceTime, or video chat was available.)  I would try to pull myself together and say, “Hi, Coconut sweetheart.  It’s me – mommy.  I miss you so much!  I love you and I’ll come get you soon.” I think my parents were secretly laughing at how pathetic I sounded over the phone.  I must have sounded ridiculous!  To this day, they still make suggestive comments about keeping Coconut and I think they are only half-kidding.

That spring, I kept my promise to Coconut and went back to Florida to take him home with me where he belonged.  But when I saw him, he was acting different. He was in love with Twinkle!  Everywhere she went, he followed.  Anytime I picked her up, he would stand protectively close by to make sure she was okay.  It was puppy love, literally, and I felt bad that I was there to break them apart.

Thanks for reading.  Stay tuned for Parts 2 through 16 of Coconut’s Puppy Story!

Just kidding! I could write about him all day, but that would be a little much.  At least stay tuned for Part 2.
