Entertainment Unit Decor – Update

I have major ADD when it comes to my home decorating projects.  I start these projects in my head, get inspiration from Pinterest, start the project, blog about it, then never finish or do a follow-up post.  By then, I’m off to my next greatest DIY or home decorating endeavor.  For example, I previously posted about entertainment unit decor in our family room right after we purchased it from Ikea:

I got so excited about all the shelves and fun ways to decorate it with the amazing accessories that I found, but never followed up with how it turned out:

bookshelf decor, bookshelf accessories

So here’s an update of how I started to visually display the accessories.  It’s not completely finished (there I go again with the ADD!) but it’s presentable for now.  For one thing, we want to finish the entertainment unit with a bridge that connects the two bookcases along the top, but it hasn’t been in stock for purchase at Ikea.  At least you can get an idea on how it’s progressing:

Here are my tips for entertainment unit decor and accessories:

  • Keep it interesting. Mix accessories with media as opposed to filling every shelf with just DVDs or books.  I think DVDs look clutter-ish (is that a word?) so I keep those tucked away in the storage drawers.  Also, stacking books vertically or horizontally helps to make it visually interesting.
  • Stick to a color scheme.  I collected different accessories from different places because I’m always looking for a good deal.  Sometimes I let the good deals get the best of me, and then I end up with a bunch of stuff just because it’s cheap, not necessarily because it fits with what I’m trying to do.  So, I knew I wanted to go with teal and coral so I stuck to items that fit to that scheme.  White really makes a good accent color, too.
  • Love it or leave it.  I picked pieces that I would love if they just stood on its own, instead of as part of a collection. That way, each item is special and unique, and then can easily be repurposed for future decorating endeavors.
  • Personalize.   This is, after all, decoration for our family in our home.  So I put a silly picture of Zavie that I love, Arielle’s most recent picture, our wedding album, and books I love – yup, that’s Harry Potter and Twilight on the bottom shelf!  I still have to find the rest of the books from those collections.  I also have yet to buy the hardcover versions of books I read digitally (Steve Jobs, Hunger Games…)

So far, I’m happy with how it’s coming along!  Just crossing my fingers that Ikea will get their act together and make the bridge connector thingy available again so we can complete the unit and I can finally bring this project to a close!

What do you think?  I still have a few empty shelves, do you have any decor ideas to share?
